The lateral cricothyroid membrane is part of the conus elasticus which originates from the superior surface of the arch of the cricoid cartilage. It passes superiorly and medially to insert on the vocal process of the arytenoid cartilage posteriorly, and to the interior median part of the thyroid cartilage anteriorly. Its free border forms the vocal ligament of the vocal fold.
