Imagine the body being sliced through from the top of the head in a plane in line with the ears – this plane is referred to as the Coronal plane. If the body was cut in slices paralle to a plane drawn through your nose and the back of your head – this is known as a Sagittal plane. Parallel slices cut through your body from front to back are in the Axial plane. It is useful in describing the relationship of structures in the body particularly in Xray (CT) or MRI examinations.
